Ten tracks of pure spontaneous creativity!

There were no pre-written compositions, no second takes, no overdubs, and no audio fixes. Each piece was played once from beginning to end.

This album was the result of several seemingly unrelated events; In 1974, my jazz trio, featuring Al Stauffer on bass and Ray Deeley on drums, recorded our first album called “Mirror Within a Mirror”. The album included original songs of mine as well as jazz classics. It also included Dennis Sandole compositions. For the next 5 years, the trio performed in many venues on the East Coast. The recording engineer responsible for this project was Doug Fearn. Doug recorded, mixed and mastered the project. It first came out on vinyl. Turn the clock ahead by nearly 50 years. Doug and I spoke on the phone about another matter and in conversation, he mentioned that he had a home studio. He invited me to come in and record a new album. This time, I thought it would be a good idea to respond to what people have asked about for years. When was I going to record a solo guitar album? With Doug’s kind invitation and remembering what a superb and sensitive recordist he was, I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to do that solo project. My next issue was to decide on what music I wanted to record. I quickly dismissed the idea of jazz standards as well as my own original material.

So, what to record? It hit me in a matter of seconds. I wanted to play spontaneously! No themes, no chord progressions, no written music. The process would be me playing and Doug recording.

Chuck_Anderson_Jazz-Album-review

For those who don’t know, Chuck Anderson is a jazz guitarist, composer, and educator based in the Philadelphia area for many years. He studied with Dennis Sandole, went on to be the staff guitarist at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, NJ followed by a tour of duty at the Valley Forge Music Fair in Devon, PA. Anderson has worked with Nancy Wilson, Sammy Davis Jr., Michel Legrand, Billy Eckstine, Jack Jones, Anthony Newley, Peggy Lee, and Bobby Darin to mention a few. Since then, he has led his own small ensembles, including a 1970s’ group with pianist Bernard Peiffer, bassist Al Stauffer and drummer Ed Deeley and his current group with Eric Schreiber on bass and Ed Rick on drums. His work in research and education has led to a long career in teaching including writing many books on jazz guitar and music. For purposes of this review, all this is to say that Anderson’s beautiful tone, virtuosity, and improvising capacity come from innate talent informed by many years of devoted work on many levels. These qualities are manifest in this wonderful and unusual album… read more
