Mastering the Modes

The modes are a system of seven scales. They are used heavily in jazz improvisation. Each modal scale is covered in every key center. There is also a list of related chords in 3 and 4 part harmony for every key center. This tells you when to use which mode.

The book explains the concept of characteristic scale tones as well as the three primary chords of each mode. It shows how to break out of the traditional major scale as a source of modal scales. With this knowledge, you can use the modes authentically and creatively.
