The Art & The Science of Guitar Picking

There are four picking pairs. Down – Down, Up – Up, Down – Up, Up – Down. When do you use which and why?

This book explores the picking pairs with an emphasis on efficiency. Alternate picking is not the best solution in all cases.

Factors considered are rhythm, direction, dynamics, sound, effect, convenience, style, efficiency, etc.

There is no picking technique that’s invalid if it produces an effect or sound that you want. However, there are many techniques in common use that are fundamentally inefficient.

If you learn to control the recommended picking technique and principles, you’ll find that you will have to practice and warmup less because of the inherent efficiency in your pick stroke. Throughout the book, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of many alternative views on the use of the pick.

Picking is the most controversial subject of the guitar. Every detail of picking technique has been argued by countless guitarists for years. The use of the pick is a science which is dependent on considerations of efficiency in time, space and motion. Efficiency will allow you to develop picking to an unusually high degree of control at any speed.
